If you’re like many people one day you suddenly look in the mirror and realize that your teeth aren’t so white anymore. In fact they are more yellow than white. How did this happen you ask yourself. Here are a couple of reasons why teeth turn yellow.
Genetics:
The first culprit is those tiny genes that make up your body. If your mother and father have naturally yellow teeth, then chances are that you will have a similar teeth color. People with genetic problems often have teeth that appear yellow or discolored as a result of the color in the dentin.
Physical/Lifestyle:
Food, oral hygiene, and aging are some of the primary reasons for yellow teeth.
Food:
Manufactures use coloring dye in food ingredients to enhance the the coloring in many of the foods we eat everyday. These chromomeric ingredients can then be absorbed by your teeth, which are porous. Here are some examples of food and drinks that can yellow teeth: tea, coffee, soy sauce, wine, colas, curry, certain fruits like berries, and food with color dyes added. The list goes on and on.
Tobacco Use:
The nicotine in tobacco is causes brown staining that is a familiar sight on the teeth of smokers. The nicotine is difficult to remove by brushing alone as it penetrates into the grooves and pits of teeth, and sticks onto all the tooth surfaces.
Poor Dental Hygiene: Brushing and flossing after meals is a great way to prevent plaque build up but unfortunately many people brush only in the morning and night. Even fewer floss twice each day and many more only floss infrequently.
Age:
As we age the upper layer of enamel wears down exposing the yellow color of the underlying dentin layer.
Medicine/Treatments:
Certain diseases which require chemotherapy or exposure to radiation may also cause enamel layer to decay, overtimes. Excessive fluoride contamination can be a source of discoloration. Meanwhile antibiotics like Tetracycline are widely presumed to discolor teeth. Accidents at a young age may also explain permanent yellow teeth.
As you can see there are many reasons why teeth yellow. While you can practice good oral hygiene, be careful what you eat, and avoid tobacco, you may find with age comes the yellowing of your teeth. If it does happen then you can deal with it easily through teeth whitening.
